What is match fixing in wrestling? Part 2
This is a follow up to an earlier post What is match fixing in wrestling?. I didn't intend to have a follow up post, but when I read a news paper article that indicated Peter Forsberg played a hockey game with the intent to lose in order to get a better draw in the play off round.
In an earlier post What is match fixing in wrestling? I wrote about match fixing, and the idea of fixing a round of a match. This is not just a Wrestling issue, it is much bigger than that. I read an article about a comment made by Peter Forestberg suggesting that if Sweden lost a game at the Olympics their next match would give them an easier draw leading them to the Gold Medal Game.
It has been theorized that in 2006 that Sweden (hockey), by losing a game to Slovakia in the round-robin portion of the Olympic tournament, Sweden would avoid playing Canada in the quarterfinals. Instead, the Swedes would play Switzerland. As it turned out Sweden went on to win the gold medal.
Should these strategies be allowed in sport? Has winning become so important that we can justify losing a game intentionally in order to get a better draw.
Personally, I feel you go out to win every match or game you play and the medals will sort themselves out.
